Here at Boutique Theatre, we recently asked you to find the most terrifyingly tacky Christmas decoration you could get your hands on, and provided a delightful example of poop in a bauble. But did you know that in other countries around the world, defecation and poo are a big part of the Silly Season?! Yup, seriously…
In Catalonia, Spain, they place a special Christmas figurine amongst the traditional nativity scene with baby Jesus, the Wise Men, and the rest of the crowd: a figure called “El Caganer”, which literally means “the shitter.” He’s a peasant man with his pants pulled down, and he’s relieving himself out in the open without a care in the world. In some places, they set up a whole town of figurines around the manger, and children have to try to find where the defecating man figurine has been hidden.
In other parts of the same Catalan region, some families will have a festive Christmas tree log in their homes, which they decorate and ‘feed’. On Christmas Day, it’s time to either put the log in the fire and order it to defecate, or just beat the log with sticks until it poos out Christmas presents. When the log has finished squeezing out the presents, it will let you know by dropping something like an onion, or it will leave a bowl of water as a sign that it urinated.
Kind of makes Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo, seem pretty tame in comparison, huh?
