In anticipation of his brand new solo show My Prerogative at The Butterfly Club, Brisbane performer Josh RH Daveta sat down with Boutique Theatre Artistic Director Emma Caldwell to talk all things nostalgia, propeller hats and 90s RnB.
Q: You’ve got an amazing voice! When did you start singing?
Aw, thank you. It always feels nice to hear that. I’ve been singing since I was a little kid-let in church but I vividly remember my Dad teaching myself and my sister to harmonise around the age of 6 or 7 by just singing at home and we sang at church. I knew I wanted to really take singing “seriously” at about 14.
Q: You’ve covered Katy Perry and bubblegum pop, now you’re moving on to 90’s RnB. Why does this genre speak to you so much?
I am unfortunately an ADDICT to nostalgia, movies like Sister Act 2 really affected me at such a young age about singing and although I wasn’t allowed to really listen to secular music as a child, I chose to educate myself and be a rebel anyway and find music I liked. Artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill and Boyz II Men took me there!
Q: What’s the process of creating a show like this look like?
The process always starts off with “WHAT THE HECK AM I GOING TO DO?!” (Haha) and then after I calm down, I think about the stories I want to tell and the music I actually want to sing. I’ve always been good at creating poignant moments within a show of comic banter with my audiences, so with this process especially, the 90s RnB music have a lot of themes about making a relationship work even when it’s not daisies and roses. To quote Boyz II Men “Those nights when you deserted me and ran out with that other fella. Baby I knew about it, I just didn’t care. You don’t understand how much I love you“.
Q: What can audiences expect from My Prerogative?
Audience can expect 60 minutes of nostalgia, lots of fun and I want my audiences to walk away knowing that I am completely in LOVE with music. This is music that has become a soundtrack to my life and whilst this is in no way an autobiographical show, I hope you feel the same way I do when I open my mouth and sing some of these iconic songs! Oh, and expect to see me in overalls and a propeller hat 😉
